It was on the third day of my first two-month contract on board M/S Expedition that I heard the inspiration for "In Deep". On a perfect spring day in Norway, I recorded a few minutes of forest sounds. Listening to the recording later I picked out a curious four-note melody amidst the cacophony of bird song. As the ship steamed north across the Barents Sea, toward the Norwegian Arctic, I began plucking the melody on my Larrivée guitar. The rolling of the ship suggested the rhythm. By the end of the first circumnavigation of Svalbard I had finished the piece and debuted it at the ship's farewell cocktail, accompanying our photographer's slide show. From that trip onward, the playing of "In Deep" at the end of the trip became a tradition.
